How to judge plumbing work

Most plumbing emergencies are the visible end of a slow problem: a supply line that has been weeping behind drywall, a water heater whose anode rod gave up years ago, or a drain line that has been narrowing with scale. The value of a good plumber is largely in catching the slow version before it becomes the loud one.

Water pressure, pipe material and water chemistry interact more than most homeowners expect. Hard water shortens fixture life; pressure above roughly 80 psi stresses every joint in a house. Asking what a plumber measures — not just what they replace — is a fair way to judge one.

Common service intervals for household plumbing (general maintenance guidance, not a service promise)
ComponentTypical service intervalWhy it matters
Water heater flushAnnuallySediment reduces efficiency and shortens tank life
Anode rod check2–4 yearsA spent rod moves corrosion to the tank itself
Supply hoses (washer)Replace every 5 yearsBurst hoses are a leading cause of water damage
Main shutoff exerciseAnnuallyA seized valve turns a small leak into a large one
Drain line inspectionAs symptoms appearSlow drains often precede a full blockage

What customers say

Have used Jewell for a few projects/repairs and I have always been happy with their work. Josh has always been kind and is quick to respond, give quotes, and schedule. Most recently I had a mini split installed in a studio space and both technicians - Nate and Mucci - explained everything to me, did clean work, and were courteous.

I'm very happy that there are still some people left in this world who know how to treat people right. I called Jewell Mechanical because my Rinnai water heater was not working. I had another company out two days before them who flushed the system, charged me $300 and still said that wasn't a guaranteed fix. The very next time I used the shower I had no hot water. So I called Jewell because they are an authorized Rinnai dealer whereas the other company wasn't. Chris came out almost immediately and looked at everything. He explained a few things about the system to me, but as luck would have it, the water was coming out hot. I don't know why it didn't work that morning, but it didn't. Chris soent a little over and hour looking everything over and basically said, no charge! I was floored. I believe in paying people for their services...people work.hard and they should get fairly compensated, right? Well Chris didn't want a dime. I've got say as a person living on a single income and having just paid $300 for the other company's work (a one hour job) i was so grateful and appreciative and just happy to know that goid people still do exist.

On Tuesday evening 6/30/2026, our A/C went out just as we were starting an extreme heat wave for the next several days. Our house had already reached 80 degrees inside. After calling multiple HVAC companies only to get their voicemail or AI automated voices (made to sound like a real person with background call center noises) that could only schedule service several days out, we got a real human to answer at Jewell who understood the urgency. They quickly relayed the info to Damon, the local HVAC tech. He called and we gave him all the pertinent information about our unit and he said he'd be at our house in about 30 minutes. He was here within that time frame and had the right part to fix our A/C system. The capacitor had went out and he was quickly able to replace it. He also tested our system to make sure the unit was running optimally. What a life saver Damon is...Professional and Knowledgeable and a great representative of Jewell. This is enough to have Jewell Mechanical service our unit going forward. If you say you offer 24hr service but have an AI or voicemail answering your late evening / nighttime calls only to schedule days out you do not have 24hr service. Jewell Mechanical has this service that actually does what they say they'll do in your time of emergency. I highly recommend Jewell Mechanical!!!
